CE marking for machines
Before placing machinery and equipment on the European market and/or putting them into service, the manufacturer shall affix the CE marking. The mandatory CE marking for machines results from the European Directive 2006/42/EC, the so-called Machinery Directive.

The European Machinery Directive requires manufacturers to take into account basic health and safety requirements when designing and building machinery.
A risk assessment has to be carried out in order to obtain conformity. This assessment includes estimating potential hazards, taking appropriate measures to mitigate risks and warning of remaining residual risks. The guidelines for the assessment process are taken from the standard DIN EN ISO 12100 “Safety of machinery – General principles for design – Risk assessment and risk reduction”, which is one of the harmonised European standards. The successful completion of the risk assessment is the key component of the conformity assessment required for the CE marking of machinery.
Mandatory CE marking for machines built for own use
The CE marking of machinery is a mandatory requirement not only for the first placing on the market, but also for the first putting into service within the EU.
In this respect, the topic of risk assessment or conformity assessment procedures does not only affect machines and equipment that are distributed via trade channels. Special purpose machines designed and manufactured by a manufacturer exclusively for his own use are also subject to mandatory CE marking. If a CE compliant machine is substantially modified by the machine user, for example converted, extended or otherwise adapted to his own needs, a new conformity assessment is also required in this case before putting it into service.

Which conformity assessment procedure applies depends on whether the corresponding machine or safety component is to be assigned to Annex IV of the Machinery Directive. Annex IV lists categories of machinery from which particular hazards originate, such as certain types of sawing and planning machinery or injection or compression rubber-moulding machinery. The classification in this category is linked to a strict conformity assessment procedure.
